To Be a Tree

To Be a Tree...

In a billion years we will have grown legs...

will we recall the feeling
of being rooted to the earth
as we fly to the distant stars

like countless species before us

to measure evolution anew?

Time stood still as we drank sunlight,

nestled in earth and moss;

we nurtured one another

as experimental species,
perhaps to meet again after time begins

and expire as it ends...

Is life mind? Is consciousness life?

We will not remember being
as we are now, yet flung far

in pursuit of galaxies...

When our reign arrives

will we overcrowd,

and leave pollution in our wake?
How many species must we destroy

to secure our own,

and how many more needlessly

in vain quests for glory...?

To be a tree is to yet be innocent,

unawakened to time.

Oh, yes indeed. While we continue to crap on this beautiful earth, these wonderous trees have no choice but to stand there and witness our terror on all that is good. I loved this piece very much and hope that the trees and all of nature happily outlives man. I wish the best for the contest.

Let's hope not, lets hope they stay as lovely as they are now and always grounded. We'd miss them terribly.

    this was excellent!

much thanks, Ms. L, for a curious thing happened- your bringing me back here made me see a major flaw with the piece- I tried to make it too poetic, cutting out the "non poetic" verbiage, and trying to dwell too long on vowels that have no ponder factor, and it killed the piece. That overly-poetic voice is not for me, or my messages! The piece is restored more to its original state now; just as I... though we are still wobbling like a saw blade... (and making that funny noise)...

don't be so sure, I think my feet have grown roots cause I feel planted and unmovable.
