"It’s no accident that leave
fails but still tries to rhyme with love"- Gwyneth Lewis
You don’t learn about heartbreak
until your heart breaks.
You don’t learn that it never heals;
perceive the loneliness until you look back,
at a tattered thread of lesser men;
like band-aids covering the bruises.
I’ve been trying to fill the space that you left with someone else,
but they only serve to make your absence more apparent
and so I stumble upon myself and fall
into all the wrong places,
trying to trace my steps back.
I left the last drops of my dignity,
trickling down the phone line to your impervious ear;
my faith at your door step;
my virginity in your bed
and now I lay vacant in his,
allowing him to lay his hands upon the parts of me
that still belong to you;
(and to tell you the truth )
missing myself more than anything else.
