Pteromerhanophobia

Like a patient moth
Wrapped in silk,
Aching to escape
And spread wings.

I, too, wished for
My wings to span the room,
To flutter in the wind,
To wrap around you,
To lift you up,
Or to just be seen
By your beautiful eyes.

Terrified they'd scare you
I kept them hidden.
Their black feathers
Tickling my back,
As I walked along side you.

Insects would inhabit them;
First little by little,
Then more came.
They'd infest and sting me.
I just hoped you didn't
Notice.

Now that you've seen them,
Not for what they are, but
Only for what you fear,
I find myself at a loss.
Soon you'll fly away.
But I've cleaned my wings
And they are fit for flight.
