I wrote this during my college co-op placement at Rouge Valley. One of my jobs was to type up policies for the hospital morgue. You don't usually walk into a hospital and think "Oh my, there's dead people here!" But this particular job made me think about that so this was written:
I keep forgetting
there's bodies in the basement
they came in not knowing their fate
checked into the valley of death
and will never find their way out again
a nurse is cleaning what remains
as the last bit of blood and fluid drains
somewhere someone is crying
but the nurse can't hear any tears
she doesn't know anything about who this person is
or what he went through for years and years and years
she just tags him like an animal
to be dragged to a house of slaughter
and into the ground soon after
he's in a freezer now
they say the body will keep better
I keep forgetting
there's bodies in the basement
nameless now; just a number
