Final Touches

Missing image
He was only 4 when he got his first guitar,
a Sears & Roebuck model, began to mold a star.
Harold Lloyd Jenkins was his birth given name,
changed to "Conway Twitty", as he slowly rose to fame.

His first band was formed at the tender age of ten,
"Phillips Country Rambler's", as  it was called back then.
Music wasn't his only talent...he loved to play baseball,
he was drafted by the Phillie's, 'til Uncle Sam came to call.

He served his country proud in the Army Infantry,
until the mid 50's, Uncle Sam signed his release.
Inspired by Elvis Presley, he moved to Tennessee,
thank God the Army taught him, "Be All That You Can Be".

He recorded there with Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee,
his stage name then was formed, chosen from two cities.
Conway, Arkansas and Twitty, Texas is how he got his name,
his first hit "It's Only Make Believe", is how he got his fame.

He loved his God and family, adored his fans and friends,
as for alcohol and drugs, to them he'd never bend.
Early in his career he leaned towards rock n roll
"Next In Line", in '68 showed the country in his soul.

Conway Twitty, best friend a song has ever had,
his death in June of 93 left all of us so sad.
His memory still lives in our hearts and in our minds,
there'll never be another, he was one of a kind.

"Hello Darlin' " just stole my heart away,
should we ever meet in heaven...
"Hello Darlin's what I'll say.

Author notes

"If you do what you love and you're able to take care of the people you love, it doesn't matter what you do. You're a successful man. (Conway Twitty)

Above a brief bio and tribute to one of the worlds greatest country music legends.
I was appalled at how little media attention his death received. I was fortunate to see him in concert in 1982. Through a friend who dated his pilot, I briefly met him backstage after his performance, as we were introduced he said " Hello Darlin', nice to meet you, but sorry I have to go." I did however get to meet and spend the rest of the evening with part of his band, including his drummer, who's nickname was "porkchop", and his lead guitarist, who's name was Charlie Archer. I have some photos stashed in the attic, that include a photo of me with his son who's name was Jimmy, as well as his band members and his tour bus with a picture of Tweety Bird on it. Though his place in the history of country music may have been overlooked, as he was not inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame until 1999, many years too late, in my opinion, his place in my heart will live forever.

RIP
