Epoch

clinging to life is not as desolate as it sounds.
life happens, seemingly without trying
but it demands the collective cooperation,
the universal "clinging"
of all the earth's creatures
to keep the clouds passing fast-forward overhead;
just as they always have.

once or twice on Earth we enter an epoch
--a turning point in any observable, shared reality--
and suddenly statistics become fate.
the end is near for many, but for some
it has just begun.

fires and sulfer turn the sky red
and lightning brings the rain of a thousand burning embers.
the air is thirsty for hydrogen, the oxygen is cornered, outnumbered,
and the dust replaces grass.

Some starve; others suffocate.  Most perish.
Those left are first to witness a brand new world.
A beautiful ruin of what once was.
