On Facebook and E-Mail,

Missing image
On Facebook and E-Mail,

I recently joined Facebook at request of friend Gregg Rowe.
Anne Barrett warned me that it was an absolute ‘time-waster’.
Well, she was right. I doubt if there is any site more slow
so PLEASE use E-MAIL when you message me – it’s so much faster.

I find that Facebook, when I click a link, crawls like a snail
to open. Even for the simplest messages, I wait
for up to twenty minutes, whereas stuff sent by E-MAIL
comes through immediately and gives me both the time and date.

Admittedly, on Facebook, one could have a lot of fun
but I just can’t afford the time to sit around and wait
for ages when I click the link and loading has begun.
My time to play is rather short and wasting it I hate.

I have a lot of Facebook friends from whom I love to hear,
whose friendships, whether old or new, I value very much.
I love you all and, whether you live far away or near,
I hope you’ll use e-mail (and NOT Facebook) to keep in touch.

As a means of instant messaging, Facebook is sheer disaster
so PLEASE use E-MAIL when you message me – it’s so much faster.

Author notes

There are a number of other kindred sites which are similarly slow and I hope the above explains my reasons for not visiting them or replying to messages on them. I WILL REPLY ONLY TO DIRECT EMAILS.
Moreover, my e-mail inbox does NOT require me to log in and verify my details every time, just to read or answer a message.
This also applies to "Plaxo Pulse", "Woo Me", "Old Friends", "My Life", "MySpace" and "Bebo" (just to name those I can think of like "Facebook".)

As a new member, I don't have any points to use to applaud, yet. I do understand your slower computer and that would frustrate me too.

I am always amazed at your ability to put into verse frustrating situations. I'll be back to read more very soon.
Hope you like my new user name. I have two of them! LOL

Love to you and your family!

    Hugs and kisses,

I have not had any problem on facebook, but have heard your story many times. I have reunited with my nieces, and many friends, lost over the years. I'll always be amazed at your brilliant ability to put any thoughts into poetry. Much love to you and your family.

I hope you like my user name! I have two! LOL
    XOXO

I play on Facebook once and a while and also have a Myspace which is basically over in terms of friend networks. I find as a mother of teenagers it's good to be up to date on such things.

I'm sorry everyone seems to have had negative experiences on Facebook whereas I have not. I've reunited with some long lost friends which is a good thing.

      Dear Pixiestix,

I think that your picking up with lost friends is wonderful. I certainly don't knock that in any way. It's the operating SLOWNESS of these sites that bugs me.
      Love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

I haven't found it to be all that slow for some reason. Could be my location/internet provider service...I don't really know for sure not being all that techno-savy...lol.

I remember the frustration I felt back in the days when I had dial-up and simple pages would take forever to load so I can relate to your slowness observation from that perspective.

  • O.K. so you've just given me another reason NOT to join Facebook. Thank you!

I think I joined Facebook but if I did, I never go there. I'm just not a sociable time of fellow and without something as an introduction (like writing on AP) I have nothing in common with most folk. Is it slow? I guess I won't go there then, which is convenient since I already don't, lol

    Dear Hugh,

I agree also, even though my Grandson Jason talked me into joining I don't go there often, I hate the sites where you receive an email telling you that you have received a comment, that's why I back out of a lot of them and just stick to Allpoetry as we can get our messages straight away here and we can see who's on line and chat to them.
Not only that everyone who is friend or family on Facebook can read and see every comment we make to others and my family have put some of my awful photo's of me on there. YUK!
    Love Bea

    Couldn't agree more.

I think it was Facebook my niece wanted me to join...
She had "furnished" hers to welcome like-minded folks by the hundreds--and no doubt their philanthropic insights are well worth sharing. I declined, and have lost touch with her. A pity, but e-mails get no answer. Phone calls work if she is at home.

It is sad. She was with us at the lake through more than a dozen summers, as much my family as my own kids. Her own children have grown as mine did too, and I do not even know the names of her grandkids, nor does she know of mine.

So much for Family. I miss Linda.
    Does it matter?

(Give it a few more years and that will be completely true.)

    Terry

  • I agree with you, Hugh. There is something about Facebook that really turns me off though I have met people who are fascinated by it. Not to say addicted!

If I am going to "waste time", I would rather it be on Allpoetry. I have heard Facebook is a good way to get in touch with people from the past but I would rather that remain a mystery. I keep in touch with a few people (a couple for almost 40 years) and that's enough.

    Cheers.
    Judith
