George

I lost a friend today,
my dearest friend,
a member of my team.

For he was big and strong,
yet gentle and keen,
and there, looking after me.

So George, my love,
I would just like to say,
thankyou for the time well spent.

Thankyou for the fun we had,
thankyou for making me whole,
thankyou for helping me dream.

Today, I lost a part of me,
and when you leave,
I'll never forget you.

You have the most amazing spirit,
so please enjoy your new home,
forget the worries of you past

Please don't forget me,
although I know you will,
be brave and courageous and loving.

In my memories there will always be,
that big bay horse, gentle and soft,
graceful, athletic, brimming with love.

So here is to you,
a horse of a lifetime,
I'll always remember you George.

I hope, someday, we meet again.

Author notes

My best friend George, who helped me to realise my dreams, was sold today, to a lovely new home, because he is simply a bit to stressed and old to compete at a high level any more. I wish him all the best at his new home with friends of ours, living out his retirement (which is rather high octane), to a grand age. I will miss him so much, because I've never met a horse like him, over the last few years I've bonded with him so much, and I am going to be devastated when he drives away into the distance on wednesday. I wish he could talk, so I could tell him how much i love him, and how much he means to me, and that it is for his own good, that he goes to this new and daunting place. I know that in time he will grow to love it, and enjoy it, but I hope he doesnt become to anxious in the process of moving homes, because he is such a sensitive, willing soul, he is easily disturbed. At least I know I couldn't send him to a better place than he is going.

    What a sad poem. At the start of it I was worried he had died, but thank goodness he did not. I am sorry you had to part with him and admire your acceptance at the situation. Thank you for your entry.

    really gets strong emotions across!and i can totally relate...leaving a pet behind is sooo hard!
