To Reach Out to the Human Soul

As we lay in romance arms
singing to the world at large
I fall to deeper contemplations…

in our frivolous affairs
as we live within our spheres
have we lost the child’s sleep
that reaches out beyond our reach
past the narcissistic goals
past the hedonistic pits
to touch another human soul?

Could we care for someone’s charge
singing to the world at large
laying light in romance arms?

I ponder thus, I ponder 'we'

this nature of society
this meaning of superiority
this measure of civility
the willingness, the capacity
to bring a foreign child in

to mold, to shape it to one's own…

I wonder what we’d offer it
how we’d nurture, influence it
to ease its mind, slow down its pain
from the chaos, make it sane…

In our daily, struggling lives
where we earn, where we must fight
as we lay in romance arms
singing to the world at large
the feeling haunts me there need be more…

the answer always rings out clear
though sadly, comes and then departs-
a mark of a civilization is in its heart

So we write romantic songs
together as we may belong
the music between two hearts and minds
but a hunger lingers, a deeper goal
to reach out to the human soul…

Summation.

To be read to the music that initiated these thoughts and feelings:

Yes, we love each other,
and we’ve sung it out to the world;

but is that as far as we reach
not to extend beyond our sphere,
not to care for another’s child
if needed…?

A true mark of a civilization
is in its heart…
in its willingness-
and capacity-
to care…

In our daily struggle
we seem to forget
as we earn,
as we must fight
as we love each other
and sing it out to the world…

Author notes

On the Summation: Why must you play the music while reading it? Two reasons- to slow down your reading, for it was created, and is meant to be read, slow- without the music it reads too fast; and also for the reason stated above- it was the music that initiated these thoughts and feelings.

Interesting. It's not often I run across a contest entry that requires that I read the work with musical accompaniment! Typically, for purposes of flow and perspective, I read aloud with silence surrounding me. I find music and / or background noise complicates and distracts.

However, I did follow your instruction. Personally, I found the ideas between your piece and the music a little too close for comfort. They were just too similar for me to consider as stand alone poetry.

Nonetheless, thank you for your entry and good luck in the contest.
