sparkles in the dark

When she walks in the door after 4am,
and the night is still growing more and more melancholy
and there's no inspiration left to gain from the daylight
and the sunlight has evaporated
and even the street lights are dim,
this is when she feels most powerful.

The dark swallows everything,
even the shadows are unsure of which form to take.
The stairs that need climbing, all seven flights,
are littered with traps and cracks just itching
to trip an innocent stranger.
She knows them well, and flies through them.
She is the one illuminating them.

The night has captured the entire building,
and the entire town,
and the entire universe.
As far as she's concerned, it can stay that way.
The black energy of the night propels her
to the top.
To the top of the building, to the top of the town, to the top
of the universe.

Standing on the roof now, and all is covered in nightfall,
the abyss stretching in front of her.
And even though the street lights attempt to shine,
she sparkles brighter than any of them.
And even though the moon tries to reclaim its nighttime glory,
she outshines it with her glowing spirit.
And the night cowers in fear when she is like this.
And even the dawn comes late,
and even the sun comes out slowly, fearing her presence.
And there are no birds greeting the morning,
and all of society sleeps in their dark tombs
when she lights up the sky,
when she sparkles in the dark.

  • This makes me feel sad as it kind of reminds me of someone who takes a trip in life on their own, the whole way and doesnt' even realise who they are in society, because they aren't.

thanks. that's basically what the prompt made me think of. i tend to associate the dark with power, and with power, comes sadness. or something like that! haha.
