My Daddy was a soldier, fought in two great wars for me;
he put his life in danger, fighting both times gallantly.
He served his country in WW2, in Europe first, and then
in Korea he showed his bravery, while helping wounded men.

My auntie’s husband served by Daddy’s side in Germany
until he lost his life to gunfire of our enemy.
In the Merchant Marines my uncle served 'til captive he was seized,
on Wake Island, for two long years, held by the Japanese.

Two other uncles proudly went to serve your land and mine;
one in the US Navy where he braved the foamy brine,
the other on Korean hills 'gainst communists and tanks
To all of them I give sincere and everlasting thanks.

My Auntie joined her brothers, WW2 as WAC
She didn’t have to fight the wars and soon came back.
My own young husband served his term in jungles of Cho-sen,
the country which had then become the battleground Korean

My son has done his duty too, in Washington D.C.
protecting a new president as an MP there was he.
Two nephews in the Navy, their proud father a soldier too,
have all stepped forward to defend their country's honour true.

My dear granddaughter who recently returned home from Iraq

after serving there for at least a year and plans on going back

She counsels the many soldiers who've suffered through the fights

so that we and others back at home can live within our rights

I’m so proud of my family, members brave and strong
and what they stand for, fighting for the right against the wrong.
I’m proud to be American and, most of all to me,
I’m proud of all our soldiers fighting for our liberty.

  • This is one sure fire dedication Dee, and hats of with honour to each and every one of your family past and present.
No words can relate to such a feeling held with a heart for the bravery shown from all. So well done for doing this.

I've read a few of Mr. Wyles poems before.

Yep, today is the day when we should remember those who braved their lives for the American ideal. My dad was one of them. I visited his grave to day, left purple and white lilacs on his grave, which he liked. It felt odd, he passed away back in '85 and so much has changed since then...except his son, though much older, I'm sill the sum of my parents teachings...even after at this age.

Sorry for going off on the tangent, your poem just got me to thinking.

  • Great thoughts Hugh. It's refreshing to read someone who is able to recognize America's commitment to freedom the world over and join us in our day of remembrance.

Kiwi fighters were among the best in the world in Vietnam and remain America's staunchest ally.

    Thank you.

  • Bless you and your family Dee for their service and their patriotism.

You know how much I care about our men in uniform ....

Yes, Sag, I know how you feel. In fact, when I was writing this I thought of you and your own service to our country. I thought of your compassionate poetry, too.
Thank you for reading and understanding my pride in my family and in you, John.

  • I read this earlier...it is a wonderful tribute to our family of soldiers...I am sorry I didn't leave a comment before...think i was in a hurry...Now I am off again...more later...

  • What a wonderful tribute and dedication to those who have battled for our freedom, and enabled us to enjoy a certain lifestyle in relative peace. A great poem.

    Dear Dee,

As one of Great Britain's loyal colonies, New Zealand has, since the first South African Contingent in 1900, sent a high proportion of its male youth to support "the Mother Country" in its Empire Wars, the two great World Wars and,
in its own right, the other conflicts which have plagued humanity throughout the last century and those which continue today. There would be few kiwi families who have not been touched by loss of a loved one on this account.
That America has been our ally and indeed, our saviour, in many battles of and since the 1914-18 "War to End All Wars" and especially in Europe against the Axis forces and in the Pacific area against the Japanese threat during WWII, and continues today in the fight against tyranny and terrorism, is a matter for New Zealand's gratitude as the reason for our existence as a 'free nation'.
It is right for nations and families to honour their war-dead and to be grateful for the past and present service of our men and women in the cause of freedom.
Thankyou for sharing this tribute to the members of your own family who have joined in this ongoing task.
    "LEST WE FORGET."
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

Thank you, Hugh... for adding your wonderful comment and for your help with the poem. I've added a stanza about my granddaughter which I had overlooked in my notes about the family's service. It's not written with your eloquence, maybe you can give me some pointers again
      love and

Dear Dee, you have every right to be proud of your family who fought in the different wars, as well as your Son protecting the President, that would be a very responsible job.My dad and Uncles were in the second world war and my Grandson is in the Airforce but thankfully he hasn't been deployed, he'll still be doing exams for the next twelve months.
A very lovely poem dear Dee.
