the other gentle sister (Ohio)

I'm not even here
I'm way down there
I'm with the other
tender
gentle sister

I'm where
she juts into
gives every bit
of herself
without a whisper

I'm watch'n her
giving like Ohio gives
everything
to Mississippi

I'm watching
because
there's only two things
that i need
to understand

... lovers
and rivers

Author notes

The Ohio is the most beautiful river on earth. Its current gentle, waters clear, and bosom smooth and unbroken by rocks and rapids, a single instance only excepted ~ Thomas Jefferson from Notes on The State Of Virginia

This is my favourite poem of yours to date hands down. exquisitely tender and gentle, itself, in tone and flow. more than that though i feel it like a call back to myself, like something i could read at times when i feel lost and remember that gentleness towards myself as well as others is always the way back. then the river just carries you. stunning work.

  • I really like the last couple of lines.

    i love that

and i love 'only two things i need to understand .... lovers and rivers ' ...

    nice ...

in your case the lover would be female ....
and so would a river ? i think there is a philosophy of things as male or female ... and to me, a river is fem ...(but then i am thinking undulating, gold and blue, resting in curves and falling out of hollows ... )

i love where this piece takes me >>> Gina

lovers and rivers, and perhaps also a river of love. a lovely gentle flow about this poem, bb which shows that all rivers run towards a gentle giver.

  • You speak of grace and beauty with a sensual touch, too. I adore the last two lines, the earthier currents of life. ~K
