Our Family's Collective Heart Still Beats

I fought with you that morning
Petty arguments that mean nothing now
I went to school angry, wishing you were not around

As the day went on I felt better
Cause I knew everything would be alright
The minute I got home
We would stop this fight

My brother picked me up from school
He hardly did before
I thought it was a treat
I got to ride in his little black car
With the music blasting and windows low

Silent, he said nothing
But guided me with a hand
What was wrong I couldn't decipher
But I knew it was something bad

We walked in the door
And mom was hysterical
Crying freely
Like I've never seen before
News had hit home just like that
A nightmarish moment I'll never forget
A call from the hospital... is Dad alright?

You were wallpapering the front hall
Earlier that morning
Not feeling well the night before
This should have been a warning
You drove yourself to hospital, didn't call 911
Could have died on the way but you were a lucky one

We all went to the hospital
I was crying all the way there
And it wasn't that far
"Daddy's gonna die"
Is all I could think
What are we going to do without him?
My heart started to sink

Off to ICU
Where you lay
Tubes protruding everywhere
I couldn't look, didn't know what to say
"I'm sorry Dad, I love you, don't go away"
"I'm not going anywhere"
Was your answer to me
"It's not your fault
That this is what you see"

"Things won't be the same as they were
I can't take you up on rollercoasters anymore
We can't be a team at amusement parks; you'll have to go alone
But I'm not going anywhere...you see?
God gave me a second chance
To be with my family"

Smiles erupted
Dad would be alright
This was going to be hard
But we would all fight
To bring the family closer together
In this time of need
Go back to the roots
Flourish our family seed
Cause God gave us a second chance
And we know life shouldn't be taken for granted
That day in our minds will always be planted
