Poet-In-Training

My niece Vanessa
Ten years old
Called me up
The other day
She said "I want to be a poet like you,
I want to write today!"

What do you want to write about? I asked her
She replied "I don't know...the sun, the moon,
kittens or the sky"

What do you want to say? I asked her
"I don't know," she said,
"But how do you get all those ideas
Up inside your head?"

Think of something in your life
That you'd love to write about
An experience, a dream, a fantasy
Or just words you'd scream and shout

Think about the people you love
And the things you like to do
Think about your family
And the words will come to you

The first time may not be perfect
But it's special anyway
Cause everything you create
are creations of your mind
You're special, unique
You're funny and sweet
You are one of a kind

Anything you write
Has special qualities
Though it might not seem at first
But practice and you'll see
It's like a song, rehearsed

Try until you get it
You can do it hun!
Try until you get it
You'll see it's lots of fun!

Author notes

(2002)
One of my nieces went through a phase at 10 where I thought she was going to be a poet. She may still but I doubt it, she's 17 now, I started seriously at 19.

I've had that same conversation.. but with little cousins and my sister. It's so awesome to inspire kids with poetry. I can see how you could. This was really a sweet piece and I enjoyed reading it very much. Thank you for sharing.
