we've hailed the family as an ideal
for more than years and years,
but when it comes down to it,
you find those closest to you
will bring you to fear and tears -
often something that's there,
or someone, is just taken for granted.
A real family is connected by love,
which transcends biology; they say
blood is thicker than water, but
what about the tears today?
What about the tears yesterday,
or those that will come with life's
ups and downs later on?
What about them?
There's more to family than biology:
love, faith, hope, and loyalty;
integrity in each person and a
sense of individual honor, a sense
of worth...that's what makes a
family, however constructed, work.
None of this has ever changed,
down through the decades.
Author notes
"I've learned that your family won't always be there for you. It may seem funny, but people you aren't related to can take care of you and love you and teach you to trust people again. Families aren't biological."

This is a fine work. It does however, erode the practical use of language. Family is different than friends. And you can choose your friends. Family sometimes has more information and history than friends. There is a passing of brokenness or pathologies in a family. The scriptures talk of the sins of the father being passed to the children for generations. All relations have their brokenness; and their beauty. Too much is motivated by fears, and pride. All we have a choice in is to hope to control how we react to the promised turbulence of life; how we choose to process our joy and grief. We choose how much we give of ourselves to those around us, whether family, or friends.

very beautiful, and true

Nice write describing reality. Family is not about blood. It's about how commited all members are towards each other.
Keep writing.

This is so true. Family can be in name only. Sometimes the ones closest to you aren't blood.

Much food for thought, and a really excellent poem that was a pleasure to read and ponder.

This is so true! First time I've read a good piece about family in awhile. You've captured the importance of family. It's so sad nowadays many people don't and won't understand what it's like to have a real family.
Great job.

more truth here than most will ever know...

I love this.
It's really relatable for me, since my family and I aren't speaking.
I live with my best friend, and I love her mom more than I ever loved mine.
This write is really powerful, and as a note: everything is poetry.
You
Just
Have
To make
The right lines.
