The Picnic

A picnic hamper filled with cake and strawberries and cream
butter, scones, a thermos full of tea,
soft green grass the perfect bed a place for us to dream,
a river bank just made for you and me.

Away from all the daily stress we’ll have a teatime treat
the blazing summer sun to warm the day,
the crystal water cool and clear can minimize the heat,
as here beneath the willow tree we lay.

We’ll watch as swans glide silently their feathers snowy white
and birds will serenade us with a tune,
no need for us to rush things as the day turns into night,
the scene lit by reflections of the moon.

We lay together quietly the nightingale sings;
the day is almost over time to go,
we’ll finish off the tea and cake and other foody things
and marvel as the stars put on a show.

The hamper packed we’re in the car, driving our way home
the perfect day has ended bedtime calls,
we snuggle down beneath the sheets and no more will we roam,
safely tucked within our own four walls.

Really lovely, I see the riverside bank, the weeping willows on a super English summer day. The Avon, the Thames, the Severn or where? It doesn't matter, I want to go home. Sheila

    • Thank you for a lovely comment on my poem, it was actually my local river the Medway and we went again yesterday, but just fed the ducks, and it was a beautiful day.

Cool! Thank you for taking me on a wonderful and tasty picnic with you. I think Jeff’s extralongameter is rubbing off on you but you pulled it off very well. So you really like tea that much huh? Marijuana tea is illegal in this country so I envy you English people.

    Love,
    Amera

    • Many thanks Amera, I'm so glad you could join me on the picnic ... and believe me there is nothing like a cup of tea for curing the world of all it's ills.
Now, as to the Marijuana tea ... it's still illegal over here as well, but, if you promise not to tell, I can let you have a great recipe for Spaghetti Bolognese that will have a definite kick to it, if you get my drift

  • I was just talking to someone special about a picnic today. I do not think that I came close to making it as magically romantic as you did. Great job on this Sue.

    • Many thanks Mike, any picnic can be romantic, it depends who you're with
It just takes a little effort.
