A picnic hamper filled with cake and strawberries and cream
butter, scones, a thermos full of tea,
soft green grass the perfect bed a place for us to dream,
a river bank just made for you and me.
Away from all the daily stress we’ll have a teatime treat
the blazing summer sun to warm the day,
the crystal water cool and clear can minimize the heat,
as here beneath the willow tree we lay.
We’ll watch as swans glide silently their feathers snowy white
and birds will serenade us with a tune,
no need for us to rush things as the day turns into night,
the scene lit by reflections of the moon.
We lay together quietly the nightingale sings;
the day is almost over time to go,
we’ll finish off the tea and cake and other foody things
and marvel as the stars put on a show.
The hamper packed we’re in the car, driving our way home
the perfect day has ended bedtime calls,
we snuggle down beneath the sheets and no more will we roam,
safely tucked within our own four walls.
