Presidential Clerihews

Exclaimed the General Washington,
“Martha, dear, is the washing done?
For today I cross the Delaware
And would like to sport clean underwear.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The progeny of Theodore Roosevelt
Feared not, I suppose, the belt.
But surely, they were none too quick
To mind themselves ‘round Dad’s big stick.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

To what demise fell Abraham Lincoln?
An entertainer liked not his thinkin’,
And so, with stage, did the President ill—
A trend, it seems, that haunts us still.

Hmmm...bit slow in reply to this one - I did note it. I debated inquired vs. exclaimed and decided to go with the latter as it might applt to all three subsequent lines as opposed to just the introductory query. I liked the feel and sound of it a bit better - thought it displayed a bit more bold...silliness. Good call, though - and much appreciated.

This is wonderful, Nando! I just love the wit and humor in these poems, especially the "General Washington" one - the rhyme scheme is excellent - I could see only one possible improvement: I thought the first word should be "Inquired" since he asks a question. Usually when you write "exclaimed" you follow it with an exclamation mark (!) - but very good as is; a well deserved trophy.

    Best wishes,
    Moses

Dear Nando, my call was technical only. I don't believe we have conversed before. Jenny told me of some of the background and I belatedly realised that you had addressed the issue already. My concern was for it to be seen to be above board. (fussy person! lol). Being british I lack the deep background knowledge of American culture and history. From my own personal perspective I rather think you deleted the wrong one, it was my favourite of the three!
Just to reiterate, it was never personal and I wish you every luck in the contest.
As you see more of my commentaries, I hope you will realise that, within the narrow bands of my personal perspective, I try to give value when I critique and to give something back for the points I am earning.
We all make honest mistakes, me more than most perhapslol. Apologies for the public nature of my comment. I have learnt from it. Thanx

Definitely liked Washington over Roosevelt. Good to the form, funny, and clever.

Well done and thanks for entering.

'Twas an honest mistake - I penned the trio and posted them as a single entry. I realized it might be taken as an attempt to subvert the system, so I made a secondary note to the judges to disregard one. To avert any controversy, I have removed what I thought to be the least fitting from the post proper. I do, however, stand by the Roosevelt clerihew - rather than an ode to Roosevelt minors, it was intended as a musing on how his famous foreign policy might have been employed "domestically" as well.

OK, fair play to Nando. As observers we are, of course unaware of any background messages. Obviously Nando's character matches his/her ability. I wouldn't be ashamed to lose to these efforts. And JL, I don't envy your job here! lol

Foul noted, I will IM Nando and ask him to remove on of the three. I fairness, He did say to disregard #1. We want to keep this all above board. I'll tell you this is going to be a very difficult contest to judge.

I am sure you will all come to know me and look (askance) at me as a fussy old git. Guilty am I.
I would like to call a technical foul here.
    This is three clerihews.
    The rules state two.
    Can one be withdrawn?
The third one seems favourite since I do not believe it is a clerihew at all.
The form is supposed to be about the named 'famous' person.
The subject, quite clearly, is the progeny of a famous person.
In this regard, they are NOT named and thus negate the form.
Since this is an objecting comment, I will not critique the other two.
I reserve the right, however, to comment once my request is agreed or denied.
No offence Nando, but rules am rules. By posting three (i posted two) you are denying (since the limit is 30 total) someone the chance of entering. Notice that I rewrote one of mine as a Limerick and put it in the comments.

    The venerable, supreme Nando Tater,
Clerihews the best of policy makers,
And adds a twist of classic spud,
Cutting deep… but not quite blood!

Very good mister T – a great form for burlesque badinage!

Hey, thanks for this piece, I couldn't think of anything to write. Now I have something. Of course yours are great and no-doubtedly will beat mine, but, still I wanted to write something to a form I've never written to.
