the frothy foaming crests.
They lap at light on shore beyond,
and sing softly of death.
Though mothers warned of waters wild,
theres where my true love lies.
And willingly I'll cut lifes cord,
to ease her tortured cries.
No bridge to walk or boat to ford,
the tide that rides between.
And cold the passage to that place,
where she resides unseen.
When we recross the rivers rough,
a bargain calling due.
With moonlight vows, one last embrace,
surrendered to the blue.
Her whispers streaming through the waves,
to soothe a shifting shape.
A crooning rush that clears my mind,
and offers sweet escape.
Singin ohh,oh oh ohh...the hazards of love.
Author notes
Based on the song Annan Water by the Decemberists.
At this point in the story the rake has captured Margaret and the Queen has helped them to cross the river so that her shape-shifting son will never reach them and will return to her forever. William (shape-shifter) comes to the river where he can hear Margaret calling for him from across the water.
I pulled a bit of the story from the song The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned) as well since it is the final song and also involves the river.
My very favorite Decemberists songs are:
We Both Go Down Together
Angels and Angles
Red Right Ankle
California One
Summersong
Yankee Bayonet
Shanty for the Arethusela
Isn't it a Lovely Night
The Rakes Song
and of course...Annan Water!
^_^
LOVE LOVE LOVE them! <3

i really like this. the rhymes are nice and not cliche, which is usually the reason why i don't like rhyme. your words are original enough so that i wouldn't be able to predict the next rhyming line. it all flows very nicely and is filled with luscious sea imagery. the ending is unexpected and yet effective.
