geronimo

crucifix soldiers
imprisoned me
before the invasion
only rocks and trees
mountains
rivers
faceless me
my brothers and my sisters roaming free

father sun
mother moon
crucifix soldiers inflicted doom
I was young,proud and free
living with nature in harmony

you attacked body,mind and soul
separated me from the cosmic whole
corrupted my heart
diseased my mind
made me an enemy of all mankind

crucifix soldiers
your spiritual treason
branded me savage
ruthless heathen
destroyed my nation through incarceration
christian guilt
alienation
I lived so long deaf, mute and blind
fleshless image in a whiteman's mind

FLESHLESS IMAGE IN A WHITEMAN'S MIND!
FLESHLESS IMAGE IN A WHITEMAN'S MIND!
FLESHLESS IMAGE IN A WHITEMAN'S MIND!

crucifix soldiers
cycle of seasons
frees my spirit from the grasp of demons
warrior songs cleanse my pain
phoenix of truth rising again
primal rhythms
ecstatic trance
miracle of miracles
I sing and dance

crucifix soldiers
life is mysterious
absurd
ironic
profoundly serious
in spite of you
my voice is global
powerful force of all that's noble

rest in peace my ghostly brothers
no longer am I your pagan other

Author notes

this poem was inspired by a documentary film on Geronimo I viewed on PBS that revealed how he was reduced to a sideshow farce in his latter years...a fascinating study of how to render a ferocious warrior harmless through 'the culture industry'

That line ... "fleshless image in a white man's mind" ... has been playing and replaying since you described this one at lunch yesterday.
Looking forward to hearing you do it live.
