I used to stare at them
insignificant most of the time
but when you looked you realized just how cool
and different they all were
but you had to be high up, looking in
Well I went to the top of an ant farm
and stared at the ants in their worker glory
chasing food in lines
if smell was broken between mother and child
they would go crazy until found
I used to stare at them
insignificant most of the time
but when you looked you realized just how cool
and different they all were
but you had to be high up, looking in
Well I went to the top of a tall building
and stared at the ants in their business suits
chasing money in lines
if sight was broken between mother and child
they would go crazy until they were found

I looked through a lens this time
looking at each individual for what he was
beautiful and significant in his own uniqueness
for the work he does and contribution he makes
you see him as a part of the bigger picture
Well through the microscope I can see the ant at play
running through his day of chores
and heavy lifting of the back
to bring food to his family
and help the clan survive another day
I looked through a lens this time
looking at each individual for what he was
beautiful and significant in his own uniqueness
for the work he does and contribution he makes
you see him as a part of the bigger picture
Well through the binoculars I can see people at play
running about to and fro
heavy lifting of the hands and heart
to help bring his family food
and help the clan survive another day

I pay to feel on top of the world,
so I can stop looking down upon others
and start appreciating them for who they are
I won't stay up there for long
just enough to remind me I live down there too
then I'll go back down to my little ant-farm-world
and remember to look up and smile at someone
so they too can remember life down here isn't that bad
you had to be high up, looking in
to see them and yourself as a part of the bigger picture
Author notes
Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

wow... when I first started reading this I was not at all impressed, I could not for the life of me figure out what was the point of this poem, it seems to be repetitious without cause. Well, I am not one to judge too hastily and I continued to read through to the very end and boy was it worth it! It was like watching a baseball game that appeared to be going nowhere, the last inning and thus far no score on the board but suddenly ( towards the end of the poem) we have a hit, then another, now bases are loaded and suddenly the unexpected home run that knocks all the runners in... You nailed this one big time and I am so thrilled that I did not give up on it and continued to read through. What an outstanding lesson!
When I got to the author notes and read the prompt you used to inspire this write I was just amazed. How clever of you! This write is certainly deserving of a trophy and I will probably always think of it now when I see those scopes on building tops in the future. Well done poet, well done!
