'Where have you been? ', I said to her ,
'I've missed your loving song .'
'Over the hill, ' she said to me ,
'For that's where I belong .'
'Tis not so true, ' said I to her ,
'You should be here with me .
I need your love more than before ,
I'm crying , don't you see ? '
'I know, ' she said , ' I see your tears ,
And Heaven sees them too .
And that is why they sent for me
To come and comfort you .'
'I'm sorry , if I called you back , '
I said , ' It's not been long .
It's just that I have missed so much
Your love since you've been gone .'
'I know, ' she said , ' It's much too much
For some , this grief and pain .
But death is part of life , you see ,
So how can we complain ? '
'You really must get over me ,
You've more of life to live .
It's time you let your spirit rest ,
You must yourself, forgive .'
'I know, ' I said, 'Your words are true ,
I'll do just as you say .
But can I tell you once again
I'm sorry for that day ? '
'Of course you can, ' she said to me ,
'I always understood,
I would have told you, go ahead ,
If say the words , I could .'
I said, ' How good to hear your voice
And see you once again . '
She said that now she had to leave ,
To not return again .
I asked her if we'd ever meet
And talk again someday .
She said, ' It's bound to happen.....as
It's always Heaven's way .'
So off she went on up the hill ,
Then stopped and looked once more .
She raised her paw and waved goodbye
Then faded , nevermore .
I dried my tears then went to bed .
But now , without regret .
For I had spent some time with her ,
The cat I can't forget .

An extremely brilliant write. Filled with superb imagery and rhythm and rhyme. This grasped my heart strings and left a tear or two. Gold trophy well deserved. Magnificent work, hun.

Excellent! Fabulous twist at the end, and I love the references to forgiveness. It's hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet, especially when we're the ones who have chosen the day and hour of their death. I hope they really do forgive us.... Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks my Lizard friend . I agree with you entirely on your observation . I could have just made it about the two of us ,
but I decided to try and make a larger statement . Thanks for
taking note of it .

Would have been a great twist at the end if this hadn't been a contest about cats! HeHe

Yea , I've noticed that almost everyone who reads it believes it's a
person . This was always intended to be about my cat and I see it that way . So , I don't mind letting people know at the beginning . However,
I may have to modify my thinking , it may be a better poem from that point of view . One thing for sure . This poem is now a multi-award winner . It is clearly now , a great poem .

This is a deeply touching and poignant poem, with a wonderful flow, excellent rhyme and meter, and and with a very heart-felt and soulful appeal. Best of luck in my contest, and thanks for entering this marvelous poem.
