A Mother's Kiss

From the time we are greeted
when we enter the world
to the time when we must be
parted on this earth;
A mother speaks with her whole heart
in the language of a kiss.

    Kisses of healing when we fall to our knees
    Kisses of laughter when we mimic her tone
    Kisses are placed on our foreheads when we are sick
    Kisses laid upon our heads as we slumber in her arms

    Kisses of pride and joy, tearful given
    Kisses of farewells and hellos; sweetly given
    Kisses when we are heartbroken and lost
    Kisses when we are victorious of obstacles

    Kisses on our mouths when we are young and small
    Kisses on our cheeks when we are mature
    Kisses of eagerness after we have been parted
    Kisses of appeasement when we have argued

    Kisses when we surprise her with a hug
    Kisses when we have learned a lesson
    Kisses of no reason, simply for kissing sake
    Kisses of knowing, spread through our lives



Mothers speak with their whole hearts
in the language of a kiss.
No matter the reason behind
the affections given and asked for,
each mother says the same thing
with a pursing of her lips-

I love you.
