The lion mounts the wildebeest,
whose horns are impotently rendered
by the weight of the surprise,
shocked and awed into wide eyes
by penetrating claws,
and the warm mouth around her neck.
Open mouthed and squealing,
she goes down without much a fight.
Author notes
Prompt: "It looks much like ecstasy, the way they open their mouths as they drown."
from "Tithe" by Holly Black
sort of a go with Freud's "death instinct"

It is not for nothing that the moment of orgasm used to be known in the 18th century as "la petite mort" - fortunately I have not yet died so I cannot verify any similarity - but neither could your wildebeest.

Thanks for the responses, I'm glad you like it. The wording was intentional, to encourage a new perspective on the kill, instead of just blood and pain.
And thanks for removing the double entry. I probably clicked "submit" twice on accident. -
A very nice write. Powerful and brutal, the imagery in the words definitely does reflect the quote. I've never read a poem written so poetically about something as simple (yet wild) as a hunt. The vocabulary you use is brilliant, and the punctuation too helps to add to the flow.
This is a great contribution to my contest, I thank you for entering and wish you best of luck.
Although it does seem to me like you entered the same thing twice? I'm going to remove the other one in just a bit.

Fine writing here . . but
An interesting piece - but a lot of people will read different meanings into exciting piece of writing . .
