As is

A bit of sweetened English breakfast tea
with toast or muffins, jams and jellies, tarts
and cookies plenty,

dreams of cakes
and fluffy sugary treats?

No not really.

As a yank, I like my coffee black
and my tea with sugar,
though I rarely snack with my drink.

I think of all I could,
But I like my tea or coffee alone.

As you know we threw the tea off the boats
one warm night long ago.
But if I had to snack with my coffee or tea,
It may just be some buttered toast
with marmalade, or blueberry,

black raspberry or elderberry jam,

But really, I like my tea or coffee
just as is.

what a fine piece of art this is...
    a small piece of life....
i hate to use this analyzes....
but to me ..this was really more a painting...
    Like an Edward Hopper painting....
i got that diner painting in my head while reading this...
such a visual of a simple passing opinion...
Very whimsical and poetic my brother.

  • You certainly threw the tea off the ships, but only into small boats. These were good Bostonian merchants No Way were they going to see that tea wasted, that would have made the residents all the keener to buy the next shipment!

The poem though is excellent, but although tea on its own is good, have you never tried it with a dunked ginger nut?

    Thanks for the entry

I had the sense that it would have been better with metre and rhyme, and also, that it somehow migt have concentrated entirely on tea v coffee.

per-haps, though I wrote it as it sort of came to thought.
Besides, the contest is on the snacks that come with tea time, a strong English and Irish Tradition, I am not sure if the Scots partake in it, but it does have its comforts.

        Tea coffeee and snacks

Yes, sorry, I was really ignoring the competition thing. Try having a formal tea 'le gouter' in France, a real sit up and beg affair, at a proper dining table, and you appreciate our little informal ways. I really liked 'As is' as a phrase, if it is that.

  • This makes me hungry for a snack and some tea, too late for coffee for me. Nice write, brother.
