A squirrel happened to come my way.
Wanting a bite to eat from the feeder
She hopped onto the pole from her perch in a nearby Cedar.
She climbed her way up to the very tippy top
And it is there she found food, and indeed there she stopped.
But out in the yard, I was playing with Highway the dog
and he saw the squirrel hop from the vertical log
Bark loudly he did and with all of his might,
he began running to the feeder prepared to fight
When "YANK!" went his collar
for my dad I did holler
And I laughed and I laughed and I laughed
because to a leash the dog was attached.
The squirrel jumped back to the cedar,
away from the food in the feeder.
Perched in that cedar,
He chattered and laughed sitting just out of reach
while Highway strained against his leash.
I watched him try to catch that squirrel.
Finally my dad came and pulled Highway inside.
And when the squirrel went back to the feeder, I just about died.
Author notes
This is a true story. While house/dog sitting at my aunt's house, her dog tried to chase a squirrel that was eating from a bird feeder. The dog, Highway, was on a leash and couldn't reach b/c the feeder was just out of his range. The squirrel jumped back into a tree and began chattering--I swear she was laughing at Highway.
That, and I just love squirrel's. There are a bunch of them on campus and I absolutely love watching them.

this was a cute story and I know it was probably a lot funnier seeing it in person. You did a good job at trying to capture the moment in words. thanks for entering my contest.

Flowing ryhme and a nice story, My neighbor's dog is a mop dog and it is hillarious to see him freak over the squirrels or a cat too. Delightful write. Blessings.

This piece reminds me of my daughters dog
The house she lived in had a couple of huge tree where a squirrel played
It use to drive the dog crazy when it snowed, It would bounce up and down on the branches dropping snow on the dog who would go crazy trying to get at it.
Love this little poem and the tale that goes with it Excellent good luck in the contest
