The Cast

I step out of the truck with a grin upon my face,
I’m in the middle of nowhere, but it’s a familiar place.
Equipped with my tackle box, rod and bucket in hand,
I’m anxious to set foot on this peaceful land.
I find a spot on the muddy riverbank,
I drop my equipment with a thud and a clank.

I survey the immense, lush landscape,
So silent and still, this is my escape.
The tranquil roar of the creek below.
The subtle whisper from the trees that blow.
Muddy footprints from fishermen past.
I focus my attention and prepare for the cast

I weight my line and secure the lure.
I cast my line into the creek so pure.
Nothing is biting, but I take my time,
I wait a while then reel in my line.
I cast the open line back into the creek,
Beads of sweat fall down my cheek.

I sit patiently enjoying the sunshine
When I feel something biting at my line.
Feeling some tension, I reel it in just a tad,
The pull is getting harder, which could be good or bad.
Whatever is on there is not letting go,
I start to reel in harder, yanking to and fro.

The hook is set within its mouth.
I reel once more and the trout flies out,
It’s smooth, wet body flailing in the air.
It’s not a giant fish, but there’s bigger out there.
It plops into the bucket with a little splash.
I bait my hook and prep for one final cast.

The line soars through the air and breaks the water with a plop;
It flows downstream never coming to a stop.
My line gets taut and I take a glance,
I spot my bobber doing a dance.
I sink the hook and reel it in,
My blood is flowing, filled with adrenaline

My rod arches like the humps on a camel’s back.
The trout emerges with a splash and a thwack.
I reel it in with all my might.
18 inches of sparkling silver gleaming in the sunlight.
Not a bad day with the help of Lady Luck.
I gather my things and head back to the truck.

It’s the serenity of being outside,
Surrounded by nature and the vast open sky.
It’s appreciating the little things life has to offer,
Living each day to the fullest and not having a bother.
It’s about enjoying life and not taking it too fast.
It’s all about the cast.
