Soldiers Cross

And when this next ones over,
in those halycon, babyboom,
bullmarket days...
when we're done with dying
and the dead are dead
and each neat,white,
soldiers cross
marks countless changes
in a thousand lives
in a million different ways,
we will hide our grief
take up the cup of great delusions,
soothe ourselves and say,
"It was the way it had to happen,
it was decided long before."
Yet, every other thing we say
will begin " Before the war...."

Can you guess what year this was written?

  • wow what great words on war i say when they tally up the cost of war it is calculated in dollars not in the brave lives lost forever more cheers glenn

  • "the cup of great delusions" - haunting, sounds like martyrdom or the Holy Grail. It could have been written before any of the wars in the 20th century, but you're not old enough to remember some of them. "Before the war..." - I think they used to say that about WWII. I was born just a few years after it finished. I'm sure they probably said it after WWI, which was called "the war to end all wars." lol bitterly. And then was Viet Nam... I remember that one well. And now, we've got wars all over, not just the one the US is running.

Will there be an end to all this? It's just possible. I enjoyed this write so much.
