Dining Alone in the Ergosphere

the curvature of spacetime
is impressed upon me
in this restaurant

memory persists
though time is altered

i remember coming here with you...

as you speak
your spoon hand swirls
the blackhole of your thoughts
intentions and visions of the future

i want to touch you again
but can't
such intensity, so much energy
your ambition - a most efficient engine -
warps your lightlike path

suddenly silverware
salt shakers and napkins
are sucked into your coffee cup
unaware of the mathematically defined
demarcation boundary

though servers, busers
and customers whirl around us
only i observe
this nightshift redshift

the vortex grows between us -
threatening to consume me

i shift from out your shadow

no longer can i discern your words
i drink in what i can -
the way your brows frame your eyes
the texture of your skin
the way you hold your fork

and i love you completely
in a torrent of invisible radiation
the whole restaurant spinning
neutron stars and hypergiants in thrall

i am outside looking in
through an out of body experience

i call to you from deep
inside my soul but you can't hear me
you are perched on the edge
of your event horizon
between your cell phone
and a plate of sweet and sour chicken

to you, stretching for the threshold
the future appears to last forever...

perhaps in another dimension
the server hands you the check
and begins to clear the table
we walk out the door together
and finish out the day

perhaps in another dimension
we finish out our lives together

but from where i am sitting
i am now alone
gazing deep into the darkness

i have already lost you to the universe

Author notes

black holes and event horizons in the case of two observers - just seemed to beg to become a metaphor...

Perfect title. The first time I read it, I thought it said Egosphere - sorta fits, too. Consider removing the third line, We get that it's a restaurant.

i see your point about the third line - i don't know if i can bring myself to cut it though, i am enamored of the ridiculousnous of the word restaurant in close proximity to the word spacetime...

He never learned to adequately listen. Reminds me of the meeting of Nefertti and Zora; You lost Moses when he went to look for his God, and I lost him when he found him...

    • Nefertti and Zora?

From Cecil b Demiles "The Ten Commandments." Nef was the princess of Egypt, Zora the sheperd girl moses married.

  • this is really, really beautiful. the ending is an excellent close and sums it up perfectly. i love this. =)

  • I shudder to think of how many times I must have appeared this way. When you fill the conversation with yourself, it is a wonder that you find anyone who listens at all. This is crafted well. Never again. This is a lesson learned.

  • This is very good
    Between your cell phone
and a plate of sweet and sour chicken
    That made me laugh
