We Can

I would gladly draw a line
through intolerance
cross it off the list of human failings;

watch as religious words are heard
by all the other religions
and accepted even if unbelieved;

witness the relieved smile of a guilty inmate
truly freed from prison, debt paid,
offered a clean start at a new life.

I want to believe
human rights are important;
not a minority game used for political gain,
but equality without inequity
for every inhabitant, living soul of this earth.

I wish history books
to be the only reference
tomorrow’s children know of war.

Call me a dreamer, a pacifist,
but listen as I lay possibilities
across difficult terrain:

Billions misspent patrolling and controlling,
yet we protect, with communication, our children from drugs -
let governments amend and re-spend!

Teach the young tolerance
through intellect
of nonviolent actions

and ask:
What would evolve
if half of us gave just a little more
of what we try so hard to take?

I know I am far too small
to show the whole world peace;
but together we can.

it's to deliver people

    oooh this is so well written i am not going to point to a specific line that caught my attention they all caught it you are a brilliant writer

  • "I wish history books
    to be the only reference
    tomorrow’s children know of war."

    O how I join you in this wish poet! And in this sentiment;

    "Teach the young tolerance
    through intellect
    of nonviolent actions"

    More often than less… it does not take a mountain of words to reach the highest clouds. Your poem in its clarity, wisdom, and brevity has accomplished many heights.

    Exquisite!

    Thank you for your aspiring writ, as it shares with each reader your skill of pen, and awareness of what has to become. Thank you for aspiring to be the AllPoetry Poet Laureate. I wish you well in this challenge.

    Much Love & Respect ♥

    Yes... war belongs in the history books... and no one should have to read them either! No more war: no more hate; no more intolerance! Good points.

    everything you say is right,

    the theme is well thought out and intelligent,
    the imagary is blunt and the style is perfect.

    you convey yourself in your words brilliantly.

    this is what poetry is.

    congratulations, it was an honour

    Yes, we all believe these things and desperately wish they could be true. Unfortunately, no one can change unless they want to or is forced to. We all know only the former will truly lead toward this.

    I really like this...I was thinking just the other day..that world peace, starts within us, as individuals. Questioning if I was forgiving of others, & myself, how willingly do I give & respond to others - smiles, kindness, going the extra mile, donating time or $$$ to help others etc. Am I selfish, greedy, materialistic..the line between need/greed.
    Needless to say in my contemplations ..I was aware of ways I could improve.
    If we are not prepared to change & improve individually then how can we expect "the world" to be different.

    A wonderful write.

  • "I know I am far too small
    to show the whole world peace;
    but together we can."

    A resoundingly poignant, strong finish to a intelligent, incisive poem.

  • These are beautiful desires. I love the way they are expressed here.

    Call me a dreamer, a pacifist,
    but listen as I lay possibilities
    across difficult terrain:

    What better way?...
    We all feel a bit small, but then, thats where is starts and continues along. Loved the quote in the AN.

    This is lovely
