The ocean wind blows over Ellis island
Early morning smog is on the rise
Some where in Manhattan someone's crying
There's a movie palace filled with lost souls
Cops are patrolling in the early morning
It's a similar scene performed night after night
Seems their dreams have all been shattered
Among the garbage piled on the sidewalks
Where the lamb and the lion parlay in silence
You can hear the city stirring as it stretches up
The drugstores do a roaring trade supplying cough tablets
The cars cough and splutter like old emphasemic men
They're thirsting to be satiated from last night's petrol bowsers
Trucks are lining up on the turnpike
For their turn and take their cues
From the traffic lights staring wide eyed
You can feel their cold hard metal stares
Down on the subway street kids gather
Aerosol cans lay strewn like empty cartridges
Where the lamb and the lion take cold comfort
Now the lights that shine down from Broadway
Advertizing space clogs the nacent air
Some just call it a way of living it up
Neon haloes in their vacant stares
Those man made lights they out shine heaven
And the stars up above the city isle
There's a kid holding up a liquor store
You can almost hear god smile
And the lamb and the lion watch sedately
Susan calls home on her mobile phone
But the reception's turned to shit
All the neon interference makes a mockery of her life
All the cabbies are too busy to notice her
Or the punk who's pulled a knife
Guess it's just another Manhattan craze
It's no wonder we've all gone blind
Because the lights are brighter by far on Broadway tonight
And the lamb and the lion simply have gone on their way...
