They're out on the town
It's a Saturday night
Had a few drinks
Now they're feeling alright
Back in their cars
Gonna take in the sights
All friends together
On a Saturday night.
There's another white cross by the highway
To remind us again that speed kills
There's another white cross by the highway
All they wanted was a good time and thrills
There's another white cross by the highway
All that's left of one night of fun
There's another white cross by the highway
In remembrance of some mother's son.
Friday night's here
Roll on Saturday
Worked hard all week
It's our time to play
We've heard surf's up
So it's off to the bay
We'll have one for the road
Then we're on our way.
There's another white cross by the highway...............
It's a Saturday night
Had a few drinks
Now they're feeling alright
Back in their cars
Gonna take in the sights
All friends together

There's another white cross by the highway

There's another white cross by the highway

Your poem reads like a song lyric.
It's sad to read to read on Monday's paper about the weekends accidents. Lots of young (and not so young) lives end in such a tragic way.
You have showed how it is in this very well written song

This poem rings so true in my ears at this time. The police here in my city are on double duty to make sure our death toll doesn't rise because of drinking and driving. Your song is sad, and I can easily visualize these crosses. Which makes it that much sadder. The hook is one that is easy to remember. Very well constructed poet. I wish you well in the contest.
Much Love ♥

With it being Memorial Day weekend, this poem was especially touching for me to read tonight. Just yesterday I saw a white cross on the side of the road, in fact.
Your poem reminds me of when I was in my early 20's and the chances so many of my friends took by driving after drinking. Sadly though...it isn't just young people who have that bad judgment. This is the kind of poem that, if wisely taken to heart, can save lives. You've done a wonderful job, and I wish you good luck in the contest.
Best wishes,
~J.

Dear Anne,
Awww I've seen the crosses on the side of the road, in New Zealand and also in Australia. it's very sad when they think nothing can happen to them.
Beautiful Anne.

There are roadside memorials in Canada too, for this same recklessness. The sadness makes me angry. "In remembrance of some mother's son." Very well done, like a breezy song with a tough message.

Those white crosses mark the roadsides here, too, of automobile accident victims. So many lives lost, many of them young, lost to speed, drinking and carelessness, poor judgements all.
A good poem/lyrics, and so pertinent to todays sorrows.
Good luck in the contest
Dee

Great song/poem!
It's sad to think of how many lives have been lost after a night of fun. Hopefully, the white crosses have saved some lives, their presence grim reminders of the consequences of irresponsible behavior.
Best of Luck in the contest!

Dear Anne,
I remember how moved I was by this lyric-poem when I first read it nearly three years ago and I think you have made a very good choice for this contest (although I was rather hoping I might see "The Green Pirate" again).
It is timely to give this poem new life inj viuew of the recent tragic deaths caused on New Zealand roads - particularly by "boy racers". There are far too many white crosses along our roadsides - too many lives cut short, too many permanently injured youngsters, too many broken-hearted parents, to many innocent victims of speed, alcohol, over-confidence and stupidity.
Thanks for sharing this and good luck in the voting.
An excellent poem.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh R.

Dear Hugh - thank you for your comments once again. Sincs posting this I have penned another verse -
The boy racers are out
With their cars and their noise
They don't give a damn
Just how much it annoys
The damage they cause
Or the lives it destroys
It's time to crack down
On the boys and their toys!
Love & Hugs

Dear Ann,
A very powerful poem to enter into our group contest.
The young seem to think they're invinciple and then the parents are left to grieve their loss.

Same thing here in Australia Wheezy, they stretch the length of all the Highways, each time we go back there are more white crosses for Mums to mourn over~angelica

well done
This write sends a powerful message that speed and carelessness do indeed kill. My brother was killed by a drunk driver which took away his life and devasted our family, especially our parents. We don't have white crosses here but wreaths along side the road where someone has lost their life. A very sad thing when it most cases it could have been avoided.
Very well written and bravo to you for writing this! -
Thanx for the comment. This piece came to me as I was travelling and I seemed to have a tune running thru my head at the same time. Kinda wierd, first time it's happened.
-
The cross "thing" seems to be global -- we have them here in the 'States.
This is an interesting piece -- it almost seems to want to be a song. You have a lovely chorus going.
Nice.
