Lost faces staring back with sepia skin
enquire "Who's this, who steps inside our past.
Who takes this album from it's shelf at last
and peeks with probing eyes at what's within.
Who hopes to find some secret, hidden sin?"
An insight to a time that vanished fast.
When was it that the family die was cast,
determining who'd fail and who would win?
Each page I turn reveals a moment gone;
a wedding here, a birth and there - a death.
No smiling face, straight backs on each, I see.
A stoic life for each and every one.
A glimpse enough to take away my breath;
I close the book, for what I see is me.

Hello Passim read this for the second time and note you have changed the line to
'determining who'd fail and who would win?' after a critique given and I agree it now reads much better. I also think it well written and thought out.
Who won the competition?

Wow, this is very impressive. You have a wonderful way with your words.

I think this is excellent - the only line that struck me as being at all clumsy is " and guess at who's dreams failed and who's would win." There's nothing technically at fault, it's just that the line is not as smooth as the rest of your fine sonnet.
Best wishes,
Bill
