Joys Of Ageing

As you grow old you’ll find that things are never as they seem
and life for you may soon become a trial,
but don’t give up, remember this, you still have time to dream
where’er you go, please always wear a smile.

A sense of humour’s all you need to see you through the day
though aches and pains can surely rule your life,
Zimmer frames and walking sticks can hamper you at play
and hearing aids are sure to cause you strife.

Incontinence from sneezing and a cough will make you fart
oh, getting old can always be such fun!

keep teeth and glasses by the bed and white pills for your heart;
you’ll need them all before the day’s begun.

Arthritic joints and failing sight to some may be a bind
and folks just seem to give you funny looks,
your memories may fail you though you have a lively mind
the classics can be read with talking books.

Before all this sounds dire and you lose the will to live;
remember you gain wisdom getting old,
go out and spread some happiness, you’ve so much love to give
kick up your heels before your body’s cold!

    Oh the pleasures of reaching that age were all these things affect you, and you are not in the least bit bothered by it.
    Age lets you walk around with a stupid grin on your face and no one thinks it strange because your old. I love it. If only they could see what my mind is thinking to produce that smile. Suckers, as the old saying goes Youth is wasted on the young

      Oh Richard, I so agree, youth is wasted on the young ... would our lives have been so different, if we'd known then what we know now ... I don't think so

      Thanks for your great comment, as always a pleasure to read.

      Thank you for reading and leaving your comment, i appreciate it ... Sue

  • In the end, this made me smile, the part about spreading happiness. And I suppose the humiliations, like farting and incontinence, are really things younger people don't notice that much because they are too busy!

    Enjoyed this write very much.

      Thank you for your comment, unfortunately for the youngsters, they will soon know of all the things of which I speak as they are all a part of growing old, but I should have made more about all the fun you can have as well ... oh well, maybe another poem that's more upbeat

      Now look here Bill, you're nowhere near old enough for any of this to pertain to you, I'm sure you checked while reading and didn't find any of the symptoms
      Thanks for your words.

      Many thanks Russell, I've been told a lot of the symptoms just creep up on you and before you know it ... old age hits like a ton of bricks. I hope in your case it takes many, many years before you notice the ones mentioned

    There's always Depends! Funny how we are born bald and die bald, wear diapers in infancy and then again in the golden years LOL, nice job.
