Physician's Warnings

Physician's warnings
    fall -
        unheard -
Suggestions to be unheeded
by she whose desires
overshadow best interests -

She whose mind wanders -
    restlessly -

She whose eyes search -
    whose hands reach -
    endlessly -

Need overpowers rationality
when left to their own devices -
Desire - a need
    where advice speaks
    the voice of reason

Be quieted - she demands
    be still -
Gluttony rules here -

Iron-fisted and cruel.

Author notes

Written for the English teacher that wanted us to imitate Emily Dickinson. This is what started me on all the dashes, and of course I couldn't keep from inserting my own style by way of spacing. I guess he didn't mind it.

It's a pretty dramatic way of saying that she's overweight, her doctor tells her to stop eating so much, but she keeps craving food and doesn't resist it. (Our 'prompt' was favorite/least favorite food, by the way. Did he really expect me to write about such a simple subject???)

I plan to revise this poem: please leave constructive criticism!

    Awesome.

Idk. This kinda made me think of a couple of girls I've dated who moved a bit too fast for my taste if you can dig what I'm saying. All the talk of desires overshadowing best interests kind of reminds me of the way a few girls have thrown themselves at me in the past. Pretty neat concept. I like it. It invoked thought. Good job.
