More than an open door or window
More then anything I wanted to be seen
I needed her to know I was there with her
Every step of the way fighting along side her
I spent hours watching you sweet girl
trying to figure out what it is you see, think, feel
Then one day you lay on the floor
Just kicking away at the wall
Like lightning it hit me
I knew I had to at least try
I laid on the floor next to my baby girl
I kicked the wall a couple of times
Nothing happened so I continued
Kicking the wall right along side you
I looked over to see you looking at me
Looking straight at me
Smiling and giggling at me
Oh how my heart sang
On that day My little girl
Who they said was trapped in her own mind
She saw me laying right next to her
I knew I was now a part of her world
Author notes
This is a moment I shared with my daughter around the age of 6 it was 2 years after her diagnosis of autism. This moment turned my life and way of thinking around. I wasn't lost to her any more and today we both see each other very clearly on this journey.
I am honored to be in her presence everyday, she is amazing and works so hard everyday.
Thank you for the contest.

WOW! this really touched my heart, I have a best friend who works with and teaches autistic children. The love and commitment she has for each of these kids is amazing and we celebrate each and every breakthrough. Every time she finds a way into their world, it is a special experience. What a awesome, heartfelt poem, she is truly blessed to have a mom like you and I know you feel the same about her. Thanks for sharing!

Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FQ, Moments shared with your children are so special and especially when you can connect totally with them even if it is for one fleeting second. This most definitely deserved the gold and I congratulate you for that. More so I thank you for sharing such a wonderful part of your heart with all of us. I commend you for the strength it takes to raise a child with special needs and it is your heart that sees all she accomplishes as she is growing. I'm very happy that I stopped by this piece. It touched me deeply. Keep that ink flowing. Love ya my dear friend, Joyce

Absolutely brilliant! This poem needs more exposure than just here on AP. I think it would give strength and hope to other parents of autistic children. Have you considered sending it to these people?

Thank you amera. your words touch me.
i will send it to them if it gives hope to just one mother who is struggling. I had no one to understand or talk to when i first found out. read all the articles all the books and they all told me the same thing, that my baby was lost to me, i refused to believe that.
Thank you again

Wow, your poem actually brought tears to my eyes. Sometimes we have to walk that proverbial mile in someone else's shoes before we can truly understand. I'm so glad you added the AN to show that the poem was just the beginning. Blessings to you and your daughter. I'm glad you found a way through the fog & the isolation.

This is a great poem you wrote about your daughter! I am not sure if you know that my son is autistic. You both will get by as I have so far. He is 17 years old already. It is a big worry for a parent as you wonder what their future holds. If you ever need to talk or know more about autism, send me a message which I you probably know alot raising a daughter with autism. I am a firm believer that these children are born to special mothers to care them. It's a gift to us. Very nice poem you wrote about your daughter!

Your life is not easy but it will be full of love. I hope you have someone to share your life with who loves your daughter as much as you do and who can take the pressure off you for a while as you need love, care and attention too. Carers need to be cared for too. Blessings to you both.

It is a very beautiful poem that really pulled me in, I found myself continuing to read, curious... was this a lovers questioning, a friends empathy, a parents seeking...?
And real satisfaction in finding it was the purity of a parents love for their child that wrote out a poetic experience such as this.
I believe the first three lines should read "More than..." rather than "More then..."?
Also, the last line in the third stanza, there is an "I" that needs to be capitalized.

-
What a beautiful write! An incredible moment that has been shared about instincts and Love!

a moment with her is a gift that few are privlage with, but one that you can never ever forget.
