Wrong-side boys bounced,
on the stoop that was practically home,
to the bass beat cadence of happiness.
The chorus they heard
drowned out the shame of mama’s welfare.
The unheard beat carried into the window
where tears continued the melody
and repainted the word picture
of what he lost,
dedicated to the woman that carried his heart
until the wedding of the afterlife.
A rainbow was born when for the first time
words decorated the air in his room,
the words of Dylan, Blake and Shelley.
They spilled from his lips
as he read and sang along.
In them resonated the verses of life.

Hoodwinked!
The first stanza of this poem paints a definite picture for me. It has a real earthiness to it. You show rather than tell in this stanza. You are specific in your images.
Though the second and third stanzas are good, the first works best for me. Good write overall.

I love the last stanza. "A rainbow was born when for the first time words decorated the air in his room..."

Dylan, Blake and Shelley, words to live by indeed. as for your plan to revise, "the pump don't work, cause the vandals took the handle". I wouldn't change a thing! Very good read here!---Mark

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, Dylan would love this if he comment on it.
I so want to believe in the afterlife and god willing one day I will make my way up those unrelenting steps.
I like it, I like it so!

How True!
They have provided much needed enrichment to an otherwise unseemly and unsophisticated world. Thanks for sharing this great write.

A lovely verse neatly crafted to shine high in columns of this contest
All the best -
I liked this very much poet.
It seems there is a victory here for at least one "wrong-sider".
Well done.

Such an uplifting tribute to poetry! It really does soar higher than all other forms of sensory input, carrying its own unique music (perhaps only, though, to those who are lucky enough to hear it...Thank god we are among those lucky ones!).
Praise be
for poetry!
A beautiful contest entry here...very best of luck

I agree completely with Nicolette, Jim - this is a lyrical and lovely salute to the power of poetry to transcend earthly circumstances. One of the best poems I've read on this site for some time.
Best wishes,
Bill

And this poem too resonates the verses of life, the life of perhaps one man but in whom we see and hear ourselves too.
This poem shows the essence, the beauty, the purpose of poetry and song; no wonder we are all here, writing, reading, sharing; no wonder music moves mountains within us. There is something timeless about this poem, Jim and the way it moves from happiness to tears to reading and singing shows us the undulating quality of life.
A wonderful poem, so deep and meaningful. Good luck in the contest, my friend.
