The Juggler's Game

The juggler is most curious,
Tosses pins into the air
Gather 'round here, one and all
Performs his stunt with flair.

"If you look more closely,"
He flashes a wry smile-
"Words are written on these pins,
In a crooked, twisted style."

What do they say...?
You wait with bated breath.
Well, my friend, as you can see-
They're Living, Love, and Death.

"Now i must warn you, wise man...
Don't play this game of mine
For if i may drop the wrong pins;
You'll find something unkind."

And it happened, so they say
No one  played for years
Until it happened, someone played
And came across their fears.

This man, a nasty, stubborn folk
Was named Wilbur Waters.
The Juggler looked upon him, said-
"YOU better play, you oughta!"

Well Wilbur let the Juggler know-
"Man, I won't be scared!"
The Juggler gave a smirk and said,
"Well, let's see how you fair."

And of course, as they expected
Crowds gathered to see this game-
Juggler points- "This, just luck,"
"There is no one to blame."

The Juggler starts on his rotation
Spins those pins up to the sky
Suddenly they hear a thud,
The Juggler says
"Oh My."

"I've dropped the pins Death And Love.."
The Juggler hides a secret smile.
"But you'll be fine, i'm sure you will..."
"At least just for a while...."

Now Wilbur here, stutters back
Into his lonely house.
He has no clue what he should think-
No longer loud, he's just a mouse.

Locked up for long
Wilbur starts to panic
Nothing like it used to be
His action, thought, is manic.

Until the day he comes upon
A maiden at his door
"If i may have your attention,"
"I'll gladly have the floor."

"My name is Flora Fonda,"
She slowly starts to greet,
Her eyes glow in the summer sun-
"I moved in down the street."

After years, Flora was his wife.
By then he had forgotten the old curse,
Never knew things could turn out
So much, so much worse.

Wilbur got long hours at his job;
No time for wife or kids.
Always putting this work first
Flora could not put up with this.

So this wife went overboard
Put on her white gloves-
Took the car and took the kids
And so the Juggler tricked with Love.

Wilbur became an alcoholic,
Spent his time with beer and rum.
Soon he lived on the cold street,
Wilbur living as a bum.

Life had seemed to pass him by
No one seemed to spare a dime,
Wilbur went to the dark side,
Went to a world of hate and crime.

Decided he was going to jump
And as he took his last breath
His life flashed before his eyes
And so the Juggler tricked with Death.

The Juggler just stands in a corner
Watching the last of this life.
He grins his old, rugged smile,
And polishes his scythe.

  • A very clever and well-written symbolic piece you have penned here. Best of luck in my contest, and thanks for entering.

  • I really like this poem, it's clever and deep. I like your rhyming, I can't rhyme worth crap, and I commend you for being able to do so. I also like how you have the poem seem like a ballad (I could see someone actually singing it), but it's not too long. You kept my interest for the whole thing. And the story is just phenomenal. I love the last stanza especially. Fabulous Job with this.

  • this is a verry good peom. I like the whole thing with the pins.
