~~~~~~
She ran to me when she was young,
velvet ears flipping as she had fun,
would dance until her Frisbee flew,
would leap in the air, return it to you.
If I cried or was full of dread,
Codie would nudge my leg with her head.
She would stay near until I was done,
then would lead my heart back into the sun.
Her unwanted death broke my heart,
this sad heart she had healed from the start.
I pray she's safe now up in heaven,
doesn't feel like she is more than eleven.
She isn't here to sooth my grief,
give me her kisses, however brief,
I'll never again see her dear eyes
looking as if I am a treasured prize.
But, grateful she's free from her pain,
I hope she's young and healthy again.
and if my tears reach her up above
she will understand they are words of love.
Poor pup. Poor you all too!
My "Snoopy" was killed by a car when I was thirteen. Very traumatic. No one ever seen me cry. He was a German Schnauzer. (Pretty silver) He even pulled me on my skateboard way back then. (1975)
A beautiful ode to an unforgetful friend!
Thanks for the kind words about Codie. We are doing better. I planted some ferns and hosta behind her grave and put impatiens in front.An angel stands nearby to watch over her. Our dog, Trudy, has also kept us busy. She is a Cairn and has quite a different personality than Codie. We got her from a group that rescued her from a puppy mill, where she had been a breeder dog. She is almost four and was rescued in January. Having a new "baby" kind of keeps me up. ~ Joyce
