What can one say about a government
that employs creative accounting?
You know— the sly kind called embezzlement.
You and I would reap imprisonment.
Uncle Sam kindly gives us deductions
to lower taxes and the poor's rents;
when really they are zero reductions
hidden by intricate productions.
It's to the wealthy our Uncle caters,
giving them numerous tax loopholes;
leaving the poor with torn clothes and taters.
Power gains from wages of waiters.
Sam says, "Rent will be thirty percent off.
Oh, and I'll shave more by these credits:
medical and you're old; so, do not scoff!"
Then, with slight of hand, dips in zero's trough.
This nation's benevolence is all show
with no substance behind rich curtains.
The poor and elderly are Uncle's woe:
sly zeros kill them, so you won't know.
What can one say about a government
that employs creative accounting?
You know— the sly kind called embezzlement.
You and I would reap imprisonment.
Author notes
Contest Prompt #1:
The poverty of our century is unlike that of any other. It is not,
as poverty was before, the result of natural scarcity, but of a set of priorities imposed upon the rest of the world by the rich. Consequently, the modern poor are not pitied...but written off as trash. The twentieth-century consumer economy has
produced the first culture for which a beggar is a reminder of nothing. - John Berger

Very creative write!
I really like your unique approach to the topic and to the prompt. Yes, number crunching in creative ways so as to create smoke and mirrors - blinding the public, robbing those who can least afford it and redirecting funds..all under the cloak of acknowleging and taking care of those who are truly needy. Thanks so much for this entry and GL!

Thank YOU for accepting the poem into your contest and for providing the perfect prompt for it. Alas, this piece really makes light of the growing problem in our nation, rather the whole world; and, God saw fit to set me down right in the middle of it, knowing I would not keep my mouth shut.
Not that speaking up has done a whole lot of good thus far. Again, thank you!

My precious Brian! Just recently I went to your Word Press page looking for you. I'd begun to think you'd left the planet; of course, if you had I would have wondered why you didn't take me with you! Oh, this world has become so incredibly evil. Since last we spoke I've become surrounded by the worst concentration of evil I've ever experienced in my life; so much so that, at times, I feel I'm losing my sanity. It is soooo good to hear from you!
Much luv & hugs, SisBon

Hard bitting for Uncle Sam, he is not the only one
it happens all over the world
He is deaf also no matter how much one screams
But his end is near at hand
Well done

Indeed, darling brother, 'his' end is nearer than he even imagines! Sorry I haven't been around much. . . much has been happening in my little corner of the world. I've missed you; so, thank you so much for the understanding and enlightening review.
Much luv & hugs, SisBon

You offer food for thought here, but probably only the choir will hear it. Some see a few abuse the welfare system and judge all as doing it. They are blind to the widening gap between the rich and the working poor. A single mom working for wallmart sometimes qualifies for wellfare - and if the company keeps them under 40 hours, they have no insurance! The rich earn their money by doing nothing but letting it sit in the bank or on capital gains from stock sales which is at a lower rate than income tax. (Guess you know my political views now.)

So true, I am just sick of it all myself, people really need their lives back on track, and nothing is done about it, the money is in the wrong place and there is no help for those that really need it. Well written again, dear advocate! Blessings.

oh don't you know it?
Momma, I agree with you all the way, and what a why to word it..this is a piece that rings true to my reality and before long it just could be the reality of the entire nation if things don't start getting better real soon..excellent write!
