Day of Silence

Let our silence echo through
Your forgotten memories
[Or were they obliterated and hushed
By the media and the press?]
April 17th, 2009, we walk among you,
Our mouths muted without a cry
To represent the lost voices
Now lying within Mother Earth.
For the lost ones who cannot talk,
We must hold our heads high up
And one day, there will be hope
When we all together become quiet
To defend the deceased minds
That have changed every one of us.

We will make the truth be heard,
For our past is never buried,
And those who were forever silenced
Remain in our hearts and memories.

Author notes

Day of Silence is on April 17th this year [2009], and as usual, I'm participating.
It greatly saddens me to know that a number of people have decided not to join in this year because they think this is a 'lost cause' or a 'stupid thing'. A more unfortunate fact, however, is that some chose not to join due to the fact that they didn't want to deal with all the criticism and the teasing for being silent. Is this what we have sunk down to? Rejection and withdrawal?

But never forget, unspoken words are often more powerful than the spoken ones.

I've been reading all the Day of Silence poems I could find today, and so far this one is definitely my favorite. It gave me goosebumps the entire way! I loved it.

  • Oh my, the emotion in this piece. Such words of wisdom spoken in a little amount of time. I liked the imagery in this and the emotion is just brilliant. Great job on this piece and good luck in the contest.

(Alot more people this year participated in the D.O.S. then what usually does at my school, I was really impressed, I'm sorry the turnout isn't what you expected)
