Shady Lady

Our constant dark companion
Who shadows us all day,
She is a fleeting phantom
In shades of blue and gray.
She is a gloomy feeling,
And a looming mystery,
And she's good at concealing
What we don’t want to see.

For where there's incognito
And there’s a dark disguise,
You'll surely find her shadow
That shades the tired eyes.
She's there in brooding sorrow
And moody shades of blue,
And she suggests tomorrow
Just like foreshadows do.

She's dim and she's uncertain
And hides behind the scenes.
She's in the blinds and curtains,
In shutters and in screens.
She's there in every valance
And in the falling drapes.
She brings a painting balance
And changes forms and shapes.

You'll find her in the fixtures
From which the light is shone,
In pencil portrait pictures
And where the shades are drawn.
She's very necessary
For artists in their smocks,
Though just imaginary
For those who shadow box.

She is the slightest nuance,
A subtle shade of tint.
The spirit at a seance,
She is the faintest hint.
And though she's dim and clouded
And keeps thing well concealed,
Mysterious and shrouded,
She also is our shield.

For when there is a swelter
And sweat begins to fall,
She's our umbrella shelter,
Our sun shade parasol.
And though she's slim and shady,
Suggesting things at night,
It's also this dark lady
Who shows us all the light.
