A blur of green and grey
faint sounds of humming
as through sweet-scented air
they all come running.
Among our fiery flowers
pairs assemble
with glinting ruby breasts
feathers a-tremble.
Before each blossom
hovering to drink
bright wings that beat
faster than I can blink.
The nectar sweet
and light above so warm
your sleeping garden
blooming, will transform.
And watching jewel-bright
couples fill the sky
I follow joyous flight
with dampened eye.
As every year before
we watched them fly
And when they've passed
away I softly sigh.
