Songs my Mother Sang – Wyleian Sonnet CCLI
When, as a little child, my Mother sang sweet songs to me,
I wondered why her eyes would fill with tears
but now I understand as some forgotten melody
rekindles memories of childhood years.
I’m sure those self-same songs were sung by Nanna to my Mother
as Great-Grandmother sang them once to her
and, when I hear one played, it now affects me like no other
as recollections of the past bestir.
My Mother’s and my Nanna’s voices, in their time, were stilled
but other mothers sometimes sing those songs
and so, with loving memory, my eyes by tears are filled
as, to my infant past, my heart belongs.
And, as I sang them to my daughters when I still had three,
I hope my girl will sing to hers as Mother sang to me.

I hope she does sing them, traditions mean a lot to me, family ones I mean. I have certain words and phrases I use which come from my mom, and especially my dad who was more given to colloquialisms, and I'm sure some of them came from his mother and further back. I guess they die with this generation however, and that is sad. I'm the only one in the family who appreciates the history and I have no one to pass them on to.

It's lovely Hugh.

A lovely memory,
also reminiscent of stories read
and re-read until recited back again.
Very moving, Hugh.

To me, music is a gift to begin with but when a melody is carried by a mother's voice it becomes so much more.
A lovely sonnet King Hugh with a side of sweet memories.

A lovely poem, a tribute.
I remember mine too, a joining of generations, and missed when she no longer could.
I sang to mine, when they were very small, but soon we stretched out on the wide bed, two girls on one side, two boys on the other, for our bedtime story. Later the older ones helped me read it, until they were all in school. All ended off as avid readers.
The magic in this gentle sonnet fosters memories as nothing else could! Thank you!

What a beautiful picture. What a beautiful poem! I'm sure they sing these songs in heaven. She hears you.

Dear Hugh,
Your poem is exquisite and brings back memories of my Mother when she sang to my Brothers and I and she would sing as she worked around the house. It always sounded so cosy and safe to hear our Mother sounding so happy.
You are very blessed my friend to have such wonderful memories, I don't think many young Mothers today sing like our Mothers did .

A lovely reminiscent poem, Hugh. I too have memories like this when my grandmother and mother would sing to me and my siblings. And I would later sing to my children.
A beautiful Sonnet
love and
Dee

This is such a lovely poem. Makes me think of my mother and my children and the songs I used to sing to them.
