Books

When I am left to please myself
I run my hand along a shelf.
And some precious volume seize
For an experience sure to please.

I sit myself in some comfortable chair
As another author bids me share
The grief or joy of some imagined wight
In the tale he has deigned to write.

As I turn from page to page
The cast perform on my mental stage.
Backdrops painted by each precious word
Show me where the events occurred

And when I’ve gone from cover to cover
I replace the book and grasp some other.
Another title or author’s name
Will give me pleasure just the same.

And even if the leaves be blanks
for a book I still give thanks.
for on its empty page I may pen
stories of the deeds of men
Else tales of beauty and of grace
That may  bring a smile to some other face.

Ah, the book... I have so many yet read so few. Wonderful parody of the original. Best of luck in the contest!

I was hopeful that you would enter this contest GtG - couldn't resist I imagine

It's a wonderful extension of Ms Farjeon's poem and so well done.

    Thanks for your entry.

    • Actually I saw a comment on Farjeon's poem on the OP daily list and it struck a chord so marrying it to the competition seemed the right thing to do. Only for fun of course!

  • Oh this is wonderful!
The rhyme scheme is very clever and well written and I think that a lot of people will be able to identify with this as many poets are book lovers (myself included!).
Best of luck in the contest!

    • How can a book lover become jaded? there's so much on offer
Seriously though. Thanks for reading and writing. I am glad this has struck a chord as it is a truth all we bibliophiles know.
