On Aches, Pains and Illnesses….Wyleian Sonnet CCXLIX

On Aches, Pains and Illnesses….Wyleian Sonnet CCXLIX

We ALL have some ‘condition’ and, if we have lived for long,
we cease to function perfectly; there’s always ‘something wrong’.
Just like a well-used motor car, our parts begin to wear
which, once they’re past their ‘use-by’ date, get harder to repair.

With some, the trouble’s with the heart which won’t stand further strain,
while others start to come apart through failure of the brain
but worst of all is cancer which insidiously spreads
through all the vital body parts in spite of modern meds.

And then there are conditions such as AIDS or HIV
or multiple sclerosis or arthritic atrophy.
Diphtheria, meningitis and malaria we dread,
from which no-one can be immune until they wind up dead.

But, while the aches and pains of ageing bodies we may curse,
there’s always someone, somewhere, whose condition’s even worse!

Hugh Wyles, April 4th..2009.

    Dear Hugh,

I'm sorry I'm late commenting on your poem.
I too can relate to all that you've written, but I'm pleased to say I danced for an hour last night non stop at the party I went to and thought I'd be crippled up today but it's amazing, no aches and pains.Even my heart stood up well and should make my Doctor pleased.
Reading your poem brought back many memories.
    Love Bea

Oh, darn wonderful!! My father always used to say, "I complained about having no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet!" Your poem puts this thought into exquisite form! Do you mind if I send it on to members of my family who need to be reminded??? Great works as usual, dear Poet. Lita

I sure can relate to the aches and pains...I'm hoping to hang around long enough to get lots of my parts replaced...

    Great.

Somehow it is not right to say
    that I enjoyed these verses,
    Condolences just fade away
    as sympathy reverses.
I could be worse of course she said,
    and pops another pill,
without remorse: We could be worse
if we were dead, not ill!

    Cheers,
    Terry

    So true King Hugh.

My father used to talk about replacement parts as he aged. Your mention of it made me smile in memory.

We all have our aches and pains here and there. My muscles are aching at the moment from the heavy gardening of Spring. I shouldn't complain because as you noted...there's always someone's who's worse.

I can't get over how tiny the person's waist is in the picture. lol

    Beautiful sonnet...reads like butter.

Yep, always someone worse...but that doesn't help my back feel any better knowing that.

Yeah, I've started noticing the aches and pains the last few years. It's my own fault, I had my chance to make a pact with the devil and I turned him down.
