The Inner Sanctum

We Pharisees, Chiefs of Priests, Rabbis,
Men of God swathed in robes of lies,
Condemn the Innocent of Nazareth,
To a gruesome and most deserved death.

For loathsome acts he has performed,
Blasphemers around him have swarmed,
Forsaking Israel’s ancient ways,
Our authority and laws he betrays.

How dare he heal on the Sabbath!
Surely he invokes God’s righteous wrath!
How dare he preach of a new covenant!
The seeds of sin his teachings implant!

Shame upon he who advocates change,
So a deal with a disciple we did arrange,
To arrest the so-called “Son of Man,”
And greedily he aided in our plan.

The crowds are now quick to condemn,
Swearing wicked oaths and spitting phlegm,
Upon the hailed “Savior” of the Jews,
Finally we have exposed his evil ruse!

Donning a crown of twisted thorn,
His back tattered from a whip well worn,
He faces death beneath a heavy cross.
At last we can end his reign of chaos,
Securing our holy seats of power,
We rejoice at this, his final hour.
Death will take this heathen “king,”
Of our glory the histories will sing!

Very powerful poem, Britt! The tone is so scathing and, as is your strength, so self-condemning. You really hit the rhyme and rhythm with this piece, too. From the first to last lines, I can really hear the words being said; it sounds like it's coming out of their mouths. Solid writing, Britt! I honestly think this is a perspective that nobody has ever brought to light, and I thank you for doing it. More people need to be made aware of the whole of the events composing Easter...more people need to know just why Christ did what He did. ^_^ Great poem, hun.
