I loved the way you looked at me, with brilliance in your eyes. The lightning never shocked me quite as much as you did.

You were my fairytale, we fell in love under starry skies and city lights. All the same as the one before. Morning-afters plagued my breath and all I heard were the monotones and high notes of your voice. Your fingers drummed rhythms into my palms on a regular basis, when we would hold hands walking down the street. When it ended I was left with a hollow feeling in my stomach and a hand already growing cold.
My vocabulary was extensive when I was with you, always trying to impress you. I told you random facts constantly. Like how your right lung takes in more air than your left one does, and the lifespan of a taste bud is ten days. And I told you that there are 86,400 seconds in day that I think about you. You would always look into my eyes right at sunset and then we would watch our shadows melt into one another and disappear like they were never existent in the first place.
On warm days in spring we would walk around the park and watch kids play. I never wanted kids, but you did so we watched them play and be young. There was a girl with copper hair almost like mine and freckles spattered across her nose, she was on the swing set being pushed by a little boy. I think it was the sweetest thing I've ever seen, I guess you thought so too. You said, 'I wonder why we have to grow up, why can't we stay young forever.' I could never answer you this.
While I started to grow up and face problems, I needed you. I needed you to grow up with me, but you wouldn't. You held on to your past, your youth. You held on to everything but your innocence, you lost that when you tapped cadences into my hip bones at nights between the sheets. You thought that maybe that was all the growing up you needed to do. You started to live in your past then, to never want to grow older.
We started to argue a lot after that. It was never the same. We went back to the swing set that the little girl was on that one day and we talked. I told you I needed you to be there, to be in the present with me, that I loved you. All you could say to me was that you couldn't be with me anymore, that you would rather not be needed. As our shadows melded together for the last time on the green, green grass you told me goodbye.

Lol, you're making judging this contest really hard on me because your entries are so damn good! This was breath-taking. So sad and so stunning. I need to pick up my mouth of the floor because it dropped a few stanzas back. You're incredible, you're such an amazing writer, good luck and thanks for entering.

aaaaaaaaaahhhh my god I love this. This is absolutely amazing; I loved every word of it. I've always loved the prose dp form, and this is spectacular. Love the emotions too... they really speak to me through your words.
"You were my fairytale, we fell in love under starry skies and city lights. All the same as the one before. Morning-afters plagued my breath and all I heard were the monotones and high notes of your voice." I LOVED this line, and the very beginning too. It captures the reader and really doesn't let go.
-I love the idea of envying youth and innocence, but not knowing what to do when the person you love can't let go of it. I went through something similar with a best friend recently, and I know how it feels to watch... with a lover it would be so much more difficult to see yourself grow apart from someone like that.
This is an amazing write, I'm bookmarking it
Good luck in the contest!
