Naiveté.

Against an oak with more carved oaths than rings
on fingers or in trunks, they tumbled in
to each other, and inhaled the slate tint
of the fog that masked his doubts and her dreams.
Into his practiced snug embrace, she leaned,
imag’ning to-have-and-hold devotion,
as he composed his words to caref’ly rinse
her away once he’d slipped under her skin.
He stole much more than she’d wanted to give,
but she translated his deceitful ways
into misunderstood benevolence.
When he’s too far to feel, she strove to cleanse
herself of quickly ceding what he craved,
and found better reasons to be breathless.

    Great write, the emotion and imagery in this is very raw and powerful, I love the lines;

    "as he composed his words to caref’ly rinse
    her away once he’d slipped under her skin."

    Very powerful words, the poem seems to me to make it subjects real with such powerful imagery.

    (I realise I have totally overused the word powerful, the poem deserves a better comment really, it is just that it is quarter to 6 in the morning and I haven't slept yet lol)
