Some people feel that stones are just for throwing
And rocks but obstacles that stand in roads,
But like the living crystal quartz that’s growing,
Like morphic mica and green jade geodes,
Like strange formations in a far-east garden,
And boulders in a polished pebble bed,
Ironically, they help my heart unharden,
Don’t plug my path, but free my mind instead.
For when I see stone circles of the Druid,
Those mythic rings of monolithic rock
Help make my stuck and static mind more fluid,
And loosen up my stubborn writer’s block.
And when I witness feldspar in the fountains,
My mind is winged away to wondrous zones,
For nothing is more moving than the mountains-
And nothing’s more astonishing than stones.
Some people feel that stones are stultifying
And best describe the deaf and dumb and blind,
And are but dun and deadened objects lying
On cemetery mounds, but in my mind
They serve to stir my wild imagination,
For far from being cold unfeeling things,
Like flint they spark my fires of inspiration,
And give my flights of fancy wondrous wings.
And when I witness weird Grand Canyon granite
And eerie ancient shapes of slate and shale,
It’s like I’ve landed on another planet
In some fantastic, futuristic tale.
For though some feel that stones are cold and tragic,
Like tablets over tombs of buried bones,
In my mind they are mystical and magic-
There’s nothing more astonishing than stones.

I am happy to have opened this, what a beautiful rhyme, flowing so naturally. I have found small geodes and it's amazing that crystals grow inside those knobby round forms. Always attracted to unusual shaped stones I have slipped many into my pocket bringing them home to go in a flower bed. This is wonderful that your poem found it's way to the spotlight.

"Don’t plug my path, but free my mind instead"
This is wonderful. You have once again come up with a topic very unique and unorthodox and wrote that into the most splendid poem. (the near Beatles quote is a nice touch.)

When most people see me crouching down to look at an interesting rock they find it insane. But you are right Rocks are great ^^ Earth's works of art millions of years in the making. -

I am tucking away your last line for future use, it is absolutely brilliant. I love how the word stone is almost hidden within astonishing.

Immense Enjoyment
When I open a geode, it shines with a treasure no other human being has seen before. I loved your alliteration and vivid picture you created from pebbles, to stones, to mountaintops.
Bravo!

Makes me very envious! I love the intriciate scheme this has, the repetition and the fluid alliteration. Masterfully done!!!
I grew a great fondness for stones when I took geology in 8th grade. They are very amazing. I'm not sure that there is nothing more astonishing then them, but they certainly are wonders and magical too!
A beatiful ode to the geodes!
