beth simms

Don't remember me
by the crooked tree,
or by the paved road
where the prairie fell
and cars speed by.

Don't remember my
small stone,
'cause stones mean little
in the community
of the flat-suited dead,

Remember the secret
that i lied with
William Morris
when my husband,
Scott, was at work.

It was wonderful!
He was loving
and caring and
strong of body
and not at all
like mechanical-
Scott.

The whole town
knew of this
adulterous secret,
except Scott.

Scott still
visits my grave,
exact same time
every week.

I really like this. It's amazing how many affairs end up being so much closer to the heart than the marriage sometimes.
Interesting topic twist and enjoyable to read
Thank you fro entering my contest

  • a good piece and i like the social commentary from beyond the grave, like a casual gossip to whoever is listening, and why not if you are there under the soil, time is there to play-decay.

  • not like anything I have ever read...mysterious and full of hidden truths...Has a real feel of getting something off your chest...I enjoyed it...thanks for sharing ...keep up the great work...peace and light always in all ways...kp

    whoa!

definitely an interesting take on the prompt- i loved it! although i see this as being more... shameful? than embarrassing, i will allow it in the competition because there is enough for a tie i loved the imagery you used throughout, and i loved loved loved the twist!

This was a very powerful poem, one I enjoyed reading very much. I have a thing with poems, I love to see specific details like specific numbers (like saying two hundred sixty five instead of alot), whole names and dated, you get it, I like to see those thigns used in poems, it just sort of pulls me in and you did that.

    Very nice job

      hello

if you have ever read edgar lee masters "spoon river", he uses no dates and refers only to what the people are thinking and there life secrects in a far more powerful way than to say beth simms was born in 1912, (which she was) and died in 1952, (which she was). i ,like him, view those facts as cumbersome and irrelevant.
the mind is more important than time itself.
though i do thank you for your kind comments.

      all the best,
      kevin o'connor/ui'connabhair
